Sometimes websites may not load correctly, or you might see older versions of a page instead of the newest update. Whenever you browse the internet, your web browser stores (or "caches") small pieces of information—like images or parts of a website—to help load those pages faster the next time you visit.
However, if a website updates its design or changes how it works, your browser might get confused because it's still trying to use the old, saved information.
Clearing your browser's "cache and cookies" forces the browser to forget the old information and download the brand-new, up-to-date version of the website. This is one of the most effective and common ways to fix unusual loading issues or errors.
Below are the step-by-step instructions for clearing your cache in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
Google Chrome
To clear your cache in Google Chrome on your computer:
Open Chrome.
At the top right corner of the window, click the More menu (it looks like three vertical dots ⋮).
Click on Delete browsing data. (Alternatively, you can skip steps 2 and 3 by pressing
Ctrl+Shift+Deleteon your keyboard).A small window will appear. At the top, choose a Time range. To clear everything and start fresh, select All time.
Check the boxes next to:
Cookies and other site data
Cached images and files
Click the blue Delete data button.
Note: After doing this, you might need to log back into websites you were previously signed into, and some websites might take a few extra seconds to load the first time as they download fresh images.
Microsoft Edge
To clear your cache in Microsoft Edge on your computer:
Open Microsoft Edge.
At the top right corner of the window, click the Settings and more menu (it looks like three horizontal dots ⋯).
Select Settings from the menu.
On the left-hand side, click on Privacy, search, and services.
Scroll down to the section that says Clear browsing data, and click the Choose what to clear button. (Shortcut: You can also just press
Ctrl+Shift+Deleteon your keyboard while in Edge to open this menu directly).Under Time range, click the dropdown and select All time.
Check the boxes next to:
Cookies and other site data
Cached images and files
Click the blue Clear now button.
Note: It's recommended to close out of Microsoft Edge completely and open it back up after clearing your data to make sure the changes take effect.
